Unusually for a community of its size, several Ogbia festivals have been the subject of published academic study. Those below are named and described in peer-reviewed work, which puts them on firmer ground than general writing about Niger Delta celebration.
The Anyama fishing festival
A communal fishing festival of the Ogbia Ijaw Anyama community, examined in a recent study of its social, economic and philosophical significance. The same study notes that the festival had lapsed and is the subject of revival efforts.
The Egugum festival
A festival of the Ologoghe people of Ogbia LGA, studied as a form of community theatre bound up with ancestral belief, social cohesion and moral instruction.
The Odemimom wrestling festival
A wrestling festival of the Otuoke people of Ogbia LGA, documented for the drum traditions and masquerade performance that accompany it.
Celebrating in the UK
Our own calendar in the United Kingdom is shaped by what is possible here: gatherings, cultural days, family events and community celebrations. Details of those appear on our events page.
